Another update… Is it still 2021?

I haven’t written anything for a while as I’ve not been up to that much but thought a little update was in order. So what have I actually been up to hobby wise.

Playing games.

Not a fun scenario

I finally finished the campaign I was playing with Descent: Journeys in the Dark. I got to the second act of the Kindred Fire campaign but struggled to complete some of the objectives quick enough resulting in ultimately losing the campaign. The good thing with Descent is that even if you lose a scenario, you still continue the campaign which is something I like as you don’t have to start again. I will return the to world of Terrinoth again but I may wait for Descent: Legends of the Dark to be released in the summer.

Once I had finished with Descent, I moved on to playing Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion. I’ve played a couple of scenarios each Sunday for the past month or so and really enjoying the the structure of the game that helps you learn the mechanics by introducing them in each of the first five scenarios. I completed the first five with only having to replay one scenario before moving onto a random scenario thanks to a city it encounter. Once it was completed, I played scenario six and only just managed to complete it without getting knocked out meaning I can move onto scenario seven when I next play.

We have finally started the new campaign for D&D. It’s been a great campaign so far with some hilarious moments such as making a spiritual weapon a cucumber, dressing a blue seven foot Dragonborn in hot pants and the moment Matt fired a warning magic missile at the children that were pickpocketing him resulting in them becoming piles of ash (obviously not hilarious for the children that died). We’ve completed some big heists without losing anyone yet which is an actual miracle because the plans we made actually worked. Let’s hope our luck keeps up.

I’ve also played a couple of games on Board Game Arena before the quiz Twitch stream with the Scott who runs the stream. We’ve only played a couple of roll and write games but they have been enjoyable. I might explore some of the other games on there when I have a bit more time.

Painting.

Clan Wren from SW: Legion

I’ve had a bit of a break from painting and only painted about twenty odd models in the past couple of months. I had planned to do more than that in the Easter holidays but couldn’t get motivated enough to paint for longer than an hour. That however is changing as I’ve started painting up the Adeptus Titanicus terrain I bought last month and quite enjoying it. The terrain is simple to paint but hopefully it will get me motivated to reduce the pile of shame over the next couple of months.

Work in progress

I did manage to get hold of Warhammer Quest: Cursed City when it was released and spent a good few hours assembling it all. The models are very nice and I will be taking my time to paint them. Some of them will fit nicely into my undead army too. I do need to base lots of Legion models as well as my Titans for AT when I’ve painted the terrain for it. I painted the Gloomhaven: JotL links as well before I started playing it as I wanted it to look complete.

Cursed City ready for painting

What have I bought?

Gloomhaven

Not that much has been bought since the last update. So I did buy the main Gloomhaven game with the Forgotten Circles expansion (thank you Zatu Games for the sale and PayPal Pay in Three option) and Cursed City which were quite big purchases but that will probably be it for a while apart from the odd little purchase like Keyforge decks (more on that in a minute) or hobby accessories.

What’s coming up?

Now that we’re heading back to some form of normality thanks to vaccines and lockdowns, in person gaming is coming back. We have just arranged our first in person gaming session next weekend and we could be starting a Necromunda campaign thanks to James who is providing everything for it. I’ve made a Genestealer Cult gang which will hopefully be a decent gang but we shall see. Games stores are finally opening gaming rooms too which means I can go and play KeyForge again. There are a couple of tournaments lined up by Just Play Games in Liverpool one of which is the store championship but I will need to buy some new decks from the Dark Tidings expansion that was recently released. They are also organising a Legion tournament but I’m not sure if I can get to it yet but I will try. Finally, the big one I’m looking forward to…

UK Games Expo

As soon as I heard it was going ahead and the tickets were being released, I booked my tickets. I decided to only get Friday and Saturday tickets as I was going to travel down by train each day and Sunday would be harder to get to. The main reason I’m going by train each day is to save money by not staying in a hotel and probably saving around £150 which means I can spend more on games and not have to lug it all back in one go. The event is at the end of July and in the summer holidays so I will have time to recover from it and build, paint and play with anything I buy. I’m hoping to play some new games while I’m there and picking up some bargains (probably from Zatu, BGExtras and Chaos Cards). Also meeting designers and publishers is good too. No doubt I will have some time on the way there and back to write what I’ve been up to on the day and I will be taking lots of photos so be prepared for Expo photo spam.

So I have been up to a bit more than I thought. I will start to do gaming reports from the Necromunda campaign and other games we are playing as well as some other things over the next month or so.
